ARCHIVED - Torrevieja to invest 700,000 euros in new animal rescue shelter
The facility will have a veterinary surgery and expanded area for dogs rescued in the Vega Baja comarca of Alicante province.
Torrevieja plans to invest €700,000 building a new animal rescue shelter over the next two years.
The new 3,000 sqm facility will be built on the current site, between Avenidas Los Nenufares and Rosa Mazon, but will be expanded to accommodate 100 animals with reception area, offices, a veterinary surgery, audiovisual room and larger area for rescued dogs.
The rescue centre will have more than 50 kennels with an area for those entering quarantine, and another for animals under observation, along with two rows of medium-sized kennels that can be shared by several dogs to encourage social behaviour.
And there will be a cattery for healthy cats waiting to be adopted, another for chronically ill cats and a quarantine area for felines undergoing treatment.
The shelter will also boast a space for large animals such as horses and donkeys, another for birds and gardens where animals can be exercised by volunteers rather than walking in the streets.
Over the last six years, the current municipal animal shelter has deteriorated significantly after plans to improve the facilities were shelved in 2011, and there are currently around a dozen dogs being cared for by a team of 20 volunteers who manage adoptions and hand animals over to their new families microchipped and sterilised.
But it's hoped the new facility will mean more abandoned cats, dogs and other animals can be rescued and given a second chance.
