ARCHIVED - Underground galleries in Caleta del Puerto in Xabia to be opened for virtual tours
The galleries are thought to have been used to store ammunition during the Spanish Civil War
The department of Culture in Xábia/Javea (Marina Alta Comarca) has commissioned an interactive virtual tour to enable members of the public to see inside a collection of underground galleries located in the Caleta del Puerto, which are believed to have been constructed in the 1930’s.
The documenting of the galleries is being undertakent by a local company, and the plan is to complete this first phase of the project within the next few weeks.
At the moment the condition of the galleries make it unadvisable to open the location to the general public for tours, but the council is keen to ensure that information is made available about the site and for it to be stabilised and conserved as far as possible in the short-term.
The underground galleries are one of the few relics in the municipality of Xabia that are linked to the defensive architecture employed during the Civil War.
In 1938, the galleries, which go farther than 20 metres underground, were dug into a hillside next to the port of Xábia. The door to the vaults had been sealed and hidden by the undergrowth since the 70’s until around 5 years ago.
When the subterranean galleries were first opened up and inspected, it was believed that they could have been some kind of bomb shelter, but recent and more in depth studies indicate that the man-made caves were used to store ammunition for the Spanish Republic during the Civil War (1936-1939).
