Undie arrest: San Javier police dive into Mar Menor to chase swimming crook
The long, wet arm of the law was in full force last Friday in San Javier

Unless you're a regular at especially naughty hen parties, most of us mere mortals have to wait until Christmastime when the firefighters release their naked calendars to see hunky authority figures in a state of undress.
Which is why it seemed like Christmas come early when San Javier police were involved in an unusual sort of chase last Friday, April 24, in which they stripped down to their underwear and dived into the waters of the Mar Menor, following a burglar who had tried to make a getaway by breaststroke.
The incident happened in the early hours of Friday morning when the crook broke into a Santiago de la Ribera house to rob it. Police received a call at around 1am, and when they arrived at the scene found that a window had been forced open and that the inside of the house was in disarray, having been ransacked.
Traces of blood were also found at the scene, suggesting that the intruder may have injured himself whilst entering the property.
At first, the officers present could find no one around, and so went on the hunt in the local neighbourhood. Then, after several minutes it was reported that the alleged burglar had returned to the scene of the crime.
When the officers arrived back there, the man ran out the back of the house and began fleeing through several nearby streets, and a chase pursued on foot. The robber led the officers down to the paseo marítimo, the seafront promenade in Santiago de la Ribera, where the fugitive decided to jump into the waters of the Mar Menor to try to reach some boats moored there.
Without a second thought, the cops shed any unnecessary equipment that could weigh them down in the water and dived in after the fugitive. After a desperate chase, the police finally managed to catch up with the suspect just a few metres from the boats.
During the arrest, the suspect resisted, lashing out and struggling in the water like a hooked fish, before being subdued and brought to the shore, where he was restrained with the assistance of further officers.
The suspect, who it later turned out already had a criminal record for similar offences, was first taken to a medical centre for assessment and then to the police station for booking.
As for the dripping wet hero officers, presumably the next step was to go back to the station to be debriefed.
San Javier police issued a statement saying, “The officers’ swift action prevented the robbery and ensured everyone’s safety... we are immensely proud of the outstanding professionals on our staff, whose dedication to public service is evident in every operation!”
