ARCHIVED - Unseasonably calm seas help 147 migrants land in Murcia over the New Year
Human traffickers use New Year low period to land seven boats in Murcia since last Thursday
A new boat with 10 Algerian migrants on board has brought the total number of migrants arriving illegally on the coast of Murcia to 147 since last Thursday, December 30.
These 10 landed on Monday January 3 on the beach in Isla Plana, Cartagena, while the first irregular migrants to arrive in 2022 were 17 more Algerians who were assisted by a rescue boat of belonging to the state-run association Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima at around 10.10pm on Saturday January 1.
Among those rescued were 15 men and two women, one of them a minor. They were sighted at sea about 7 nautical miles out, just southeast of Cabo de Palos, in Cartagena.
This is in addition to three boats that were intercepted on Thursday with 52 people and six boats with 68 people on them on Friday.
All of the arrivals to Murcian shores from across the water in Africa are apparently in good health, having been inspected by Maritime Rescue and Red Cross workers. It is thought that the human traffickers who captain the ‘patera’ boats that bring the migrants into Spain illegally were trying to take advantage of a relatively low and lax period for border police, plus the uncharacteristically calm sea conditions, to land as many boats as possible over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
