ARCHIVED - VIDEO: Chinese rocket debris creates spectacular blazing streak in the sky over Alicante
Footage of space debris lighting up the sky in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province has gone viral
Spectacular scenes of a blazing streak lighting up the sky over the Vega Baja area of Alicante have gone viral, initially mystifying witnesses to the phenomenon.
Incredible images were filmed at around 12.30am on Tuesday June 21, not just in Alicante but also in several areas in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid and Toledo.
At first, locals in the Vega Baja thought they were witnessing meteorites, but the impressive light was in fact space debris, the remains of a Chinese rocket to be precise.
Chang Zheng 2F was launched earlier this month, part of which burned up in the atmosphere creating an incredible light show for those lucky enough to be watching the sky at the time.
For those who missed it, a video has been shared on The Mastral Project's Twitter account which shows the stunning beam of light left behind by the rocket's debris.
¡Impresionante!

Since the beginning of the space age in 1957 tons of rockets, ships and satellites have been launched into space. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimates that there are about 900,000 useless objects larger than one centimeter orbiting the Earth which the UN has warned endangers future missions and even ground communications.
