ARCHIVED - Watching you: Benidorm to put CCTV on its beaches to prevent overcrowding
Benidorm Town Hall plans to place close circuit cameras in areas of the Marina Baixa resort with the highest influx of tourists
In an attempt to prevent overcrowding and monitor movement and capacity levels on and around Benidorm's hugely popular beaches, the Town Hall plans to install CCTV in areas that typically attract the most tourists, such as Poniente and Mal Mas, ahead of the summer season.
The 145,000-euro project is part of the municipality's Tourism Sustainability Plan and will also provide real-time information about capacity levels so that the local authority can determine which areas are the busiest and most frequented to "help guide future mobility improvements" where required.
In addition, new free wifi access points will be created in Paseo de la Carretera and Parque de Elche.
Poniente and Mal Pas beaches are considered to be more "optimal" for the installation of CCTV due to the fact they have a large influx of people, a mix of tourists and local residents.
Levante beach attracts the most holidaymakers, mainly due to the higher concentration of hotels and leisure facilities, but doesn't appear to be included in the plans which state: "A video surveillance network will be created using IP cameras, designed to send video and audio signals over the Internet from a router or a local fiber optic network."
Through a computer connected to the network it will be possible to record images remotely.
According to Benidorm Town Hall, one of the main objectives of the project is to "get to know the user better", and to do this, the local authority requires a "platform to analyse visitors and busy periods" through connectivity to the network and data on social networks.
"Through these accesses it will be possible to know the number of women and men, the hourly interval of maximum connections, the most used day, loyalty, direct impacts on social networks or clicks to the landing page."
