ARCHIVED - Whole week of free activities in Alicante city aims to promote sustainable lifestyles
Alicante city is offering free prizes, bike repairs and activities as part of European Mobility Week this September
The Alicante City Council has declared September the month of ‘sustainable, healthy and safe transport’, and will run an extensive programme of free activities from September 16 to 22 to promote sustainability and a healthy lifestyle.
The move comes during European Mobility Week, and is part of a wider push by Alicante city to raise environmental awareness and promote ‘sustainable mobility as the main axis to achieve a change in behaviour when choosing a non-polluting and healthy mode of transport.’
Bicycle repair workshop
Among the activities taking place during the week are a free bicycle repair workshop, which will be open from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00 and will be held in a different square throughout the city each day:
- Thursday September 16: Gran Vía-Calle Teulada
- Friday September 17: Avenida Historiador Vicente Ramos-Avenida de las Naciones
- Monday September 20: Paseo Escritor Joan Fuster-Calle Méjico
- Tuesday September 21: Calle Padre Esplá-Bulevar del Plá
- Wednesday September 22: Plaza Ayuntamiento
As well as featuring a mechanic to fix bikes free of charge, Alicante residents can also register their bikes at the Biciregistro free of charge, making them easier to recover if they are lost or stolen.
Mass bike ride
On Sunday September 19, there will also be an organised group cycle route from 10:00 to 14:00, which will run along the coast from the Plaza del Mar to the Avenida de Villajoyosa. The aim of this ‘Ciclovía del Litoral’ is to reclaim the streets and encourage the use of bicycles and personal, sustainable vehicles.
Participants must sign up to take part online, with those who register being entered into a prize draw for three bicycles, which will take place on Wednesday September 22 in the Plaza Ayuntamiento.
Gymkhana through Torres de la Huerta
On Saturday September 18 from 10:00 to 14:00 there will be a free gymkhana through Torres de la Huerta starting at Torre Reixes, which involves solving clues given by QR code, and there is a prize draw for a bicycle helmet.
Walking tours
Between September 20 and 22 from 18:00 to 20:00 in the evening, there will be free guided walking tours going on around the city’s green areas in an effort to promote eco-awareness and walking:
- On Monday September 20, there is a walk to discover the trees in the centre of Alicante, from the Plaza del Paseíto de Ramiro
- On Tuesday September 21, there is a hike up Monte Benacantil, which will start at the CEAM Benacantil on Calle Vázquez de Mella, on the corner of the road up to Santa Bárbara Castle
- On Wednesday September 22, walkers can tour the Historic Centre and Santa Cruz
Cycling commuter scheme
Finally, people are being encouraged to cycle to work during Mobility week. Just take a photo on Instagram of your bike ride to work with the hashtag #voyaltrabajoenbici (Spanish for ‘I go to work by bike’) and the best photo will be awarded a gift box with an experience to choose from – either a night in a hotel, dinner in a restaurant or an adventure pack, valued at 150 euros.
Environmental awareness in Alicante
This year’s participation in European Mobility Week ties into a host of other projects and initiatives that the City of Alicante has implemented this year like implementing zones with a 20 km/h speed limit, the pedestrianisation of the city centre and the coastline, and the closing off the quarry and the Rambla de Méndez Núñez to traffic.
