ARCHIVED - Why Murcia has one of the fastest growing caravan fleets in Spain
The sale of motorhomes in Murcia is booming, and so are the prices of campervans
The Region of Murcia is the autonomous community in Spain with the second highest increase in the sale of motorhomes and caravans over the last two years, after the Balearic Islands.
Between 2019 and 2021, the number of campervans purchased in Murcia rose from 99 to 143, a 44.4% increase. Murcia is bucking the national trend in Spain, where 6,467 caravans and motorhomes were bought and sold last year, 1.4% lower than in 2019.
Murcia is increasingly seen as a quality destination for camping and caravan holidays, one of the best in Spain, as demonstrated by the astounding tourist figures for campsites this summer.

This trend is being partly put down to the penchant for staycations post-lockdown, with campervans providing freedom and privacy at the same time, while they are also a more economical holiday choice in a time of rising living costs.
In fact, the regional government in Murcia has recently passed legislation to improve the quality of motorhome tourism and ensure it is well regulated like the hotel sector.
The price of campervans has risen by around 30%, from an average of 49,000 euros in 2018 up to around 64,000 euros in 2022.
In a recent interview with Spanish media, the Director General of Traffic, Pere Navarro, spoke of this “boom” in the purchase of motorhomes, and pointed out that a lot of them are bought “second-hand and brought from Europe”.
Towns across Spain are now looking to increase the number of motorhome parking areas and service stations for caravans.
“You find municipalities that are delighted (with caravanners) because they consume more, but others are not because motorhomes take up a lot of space,” says Navarro.
Like it or not, it seems motorhomes and camping in the Murcia are here to stay (and go, and stay, and go…)
