23-year-old dies in car accident after crashing into Málaga toll booth on the AP-46
The crash at the Las Pedrizas toll booth left one man dead and two others injured
A 23-year-old man was killed and two others were seriously injured early on Sunday morning, February 2, when their car crashed into the toll booth at Las Pedrizas in the province of Málaga.
The vehicle, which was reportedly travelling at around 120kmh, collided head-on with the concrete barrier of the toll system, leaving the occupants trapped inside.
The accident occurred at approximately 6.30am at kilometre 6 of the AP-46 motorway near Casabermeja. Emergency services, including 112 Andalucía, 061, the Fire Brigade and the Guardia Civil de Tráfico, were dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters had to extract the victims from the wreckage, as they had been trapped due to the force of the impact.
Despite the rapid intervention of medical personnel, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The other two occupants were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Initial reports indicate that the driver ignored safety measures before colliding with the toll booth, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Speed reduction strips had been installed at the toll to control vehicle speed, but they were destroyed in the crash.
Fortunately, there were no toll booth workers present at the time, as the station operates from 6am to midnight and experiences lower traffic volumes on Sundays.
This is already the second fatal accident in Málaga province this year. Last week, a 52-year-old motorcyclist died after a crash at the Carlos Haya roundabout in Malaga city.
According to recent data from the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), Málaga roads claimed the lives of 37 people in 2024, with distractions cited as the primary cause in 47% of cases.
While the overall number of fatalities has slightly decreased compared to 2023, a concerning statistic has emerged: the number of motorcyclists killed has doubled, rising from five to ten, accounting for 27% of all road deaths.
