ARCHIVED - Alicante council begins spring campaign against common and tiger mosquitos
Alicante City Council has initiated its spring treatment campaign to control mosquito larvae around the city, which will run until the end of the summer.
On Monday contractors began spraying the Aguamarga wetlands, as well as the Juncaret and Orgegia ravines, all areas in which mosquitos can be a problem during the warmer months of the year as they are natural sources of water.
In addition, operatives are applying the treatment to eliminate larvae in the waste water collection scuppers distributed throughout the streets and squares of the city and the beaches which remove rain and water-run-off, connecting into the sewage system.
Councillor for the Environment, Manuel Villar, explained that the fumigation treatments will be carried out between two and three days a week from now until the end of the summer in all areas with stagnant waters such as the Aguamarga and Urbanova wetlands from the border with El Altet up to the desalination plant, or the Juncaret and Orgegia ravine, from the vicinity of the treatment plant to the mouth of the Albufereta beach, among others .
These treatments combat the appearance and development of both the common mosquito and tiger mosquito larvae, which develop more profusely as temperatures rise during the spring and summer in spaces with stagnant waters such as wetlands, ravines and drains. It’s also important for both private and neighborhood communities to avoid the creation of any stagnant water pools which can be produced by watering plants and trees and allowing water to form in saucers or containers of any type and by ensuring that unused swimming pools are not left to fill with rainwater which creates perfect conditions for mosquito soup to form.
Lokímica, the concessionary contracted by the council to manage this service through the l'Alacantí comarca, applies these treatments against mosquitoes to kill larvae in the collection points of the drains, as well as treating against cockroaches and rodents through the traps from the sewer.
