August 13 Demonstration to demand 24-hour medical centre in Los Alcázares

The residents of Los Alcázares have no 24-hour state health facility at their disposal

When the municipality of Los Alcázares gained its independence from those of San Javier and Torre Pacheco in 1983 it was one of the smallest in the Region of Murcia, with a population of a little over 2,000, but in the intervening years it has grown beyond recognition and is now home to well over 20,000.

Little wonder, then, that some of the basic services and infrastructures have needed expansion in recent years, but the feeling is that in the field of health care Los Alcázares has been somewhat forgotten. It has become one of the main demands of locals that they be awarded a 24-hour medical and health centre, catering for the substantial year-round population as well as for the huge influx of visitors during the months of July and August.

In February of this year the Town Hall of Los Alcázares, acting on behalf of the local population, delivered a petition signed by more than 15,000 people to the regional health authority in Murcia, demanding 24-hour service at the local health centre and expressing opposition to plans to create a sanitation incineration facility in the municipality.

The petition was first created at events during the summer of 2025 and some of those signing must have been summer visitors, but even so the collection of more than 15,000 names is quite an achievement in a municipality with a population of only just over 20,000!

But still the calls for a 24-hour centre have not been heeded, and another demonstration is being held on Thursday 13^th August outside the health centre at 20.00. Anyone who agrees with the demand is of course welcome to attend and show their support!
