August 15 is a bank holiday across Spain: Check which supermarkets are open
Find out which establishments will be closing this Saturday, the feast day of Our Lady of the Assumption and a national holiday in Spain
If you need to do a supermarket run this weekend, you’d do well to check the opening hours before heading out. Saturday August 15, 2026 is a national public holiday across Spain for the Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption, meaning many supermarkets will change their usual opening hours.
There isn’t one schedule covering the whole country, however. Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi and DIA can all have different opening hours depending on the autonomous community, town and individual store.
The safest option is to check the supermarket’s official store locator before setting off. Many chains have already published special opening hours for some stores, particularly in popular tourist areas where supermarkets are more likely to open on public holidays.
Mercadona: Check each store
Mercadona doesn’t have a single nationwide schedule for public holidays and directs customers to its supermarket locator to find out whether their local store is open and what hours it will operate.
This is particularly important in August, when supermarkets in busy tourist destinations can have different opening arrangements from other stores in the chain.
It’s therefore not possible to say that all Mercadona stores will either be open or closed on August 15. Check your local store before making the trip.
Carrefour: Some stores will be open
Carrefour has a dedicated section where customers can check Sunday and public holiday opening hours for individual stores.
The chain operates several different types of supermarket, including Carrefour hypermarkets, Carrefour Market and Carrefour Express, so opening hours can vary considerably, even between stores in the same town or city.
Some stores have already listed special hours for public holidays, with certain hypermarkets operating from 9am to 10pm, while some Carrefour Express stores have shorter opening times.
The opening hours for August 15 should be checked on the listing for your local store.
Lidl: Opening hours depend on the store
Lidl also doesn’t operate one opening schedule across Spain on public holidays.
The chain recommends using its official store locator, where you can enter your location and check the latest opening hours for your local supermarket.
Some Lidl stores in tourist areas may open on Sundays and public holidays while others will remain closed.
That means you shouldn’t assume your local Lidl will be open on August 15 simply because it normally opens on Saturdays. The public holiday may mean different hours or a full-day closure.
Aldi: Some stores are already showing August 15 hours
Aldi provides detailed information about special opening hours on individual store listings, and some locations have already confirmed that they’ll open on August 15.
For example, the Aldi on Calle de la Cruz in Torremolinos is listed as open from 9am to 10pm, with the same hours shown for stores in Estepona, Fuengirola, Mijas and central Seville.
Other stores have different schedules. The Aldi in Xàtiva is listed as open from 9am to 9.30pm, while the store in Platja d’Aro is due to open from 8am to 10pm.
The differences are another reason to check the individual store rather than relying on the chain’s usual opening hours.
DIA: Some stores will also open
DIA says most of its supermarkets normally open from around 9am to 9.30pm from Monday to Saturday, although some stores also open on Sundays.
The chain recommends checking its official store locator for the exact hours of each supermarket.
There is no single national opening schedule for August 15, so opening times will depend on the individual store and the trading rules that apply in its area.
Why are supermarket opening hours different on August 15?
Although August 15 is a national public holiday, Spain’s rules on Sunday and public holiday trading allow autonomous communities and municipalities to determine authorised opening days. There are also exceptions for businesses in areas with large numbers of tourists.
That means two supermarkets belonging to the same chain can have completely different schedules on the same day. One could be closed, another might open for just the morning and a third could operate almost as normal.
The differences are particularly common in coastal tourist destinations and large cities, where supermarkets are more likely to have permission to open on public holidays.
With August 15 falling on a Saturday this year, it may be tempting to assume your usual supermarket will be operating normally. A quick check before you leave home could save you a wasted journey.
