British athlete dies in Spain during Ironman race

The man was pulled from the water after struggling in the swimming part of the event

A 25-year-old British man has died in Spain while taking part in a Half Ironman competition in the northern Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The man had travelled from the UK to Spain with some friends specifically to take part in the competition. Reports say he went into cardiac arrest during the swimming section of the race on Sunday July 12.

The Ironman 70.3, or Half Ironman, is a long-distance triathlon event covering 70.3 miles: 1.2 miles swimming, 56 miles cycling and 13.1 miles running.

The Brit athlete, who has not been named, was around 41 metres from the shoreline when he was located at around 8am after race marshals and other competitors realised he was struggling.

He was pulled from the water and paramedics tried to revive him by the water’s edge, but to no avail, and he was pronounced dead at around 9am.

After the autopsy, which is expected to determine that the man died from natural causes, he will be repatriated to the UK.

In a statement, race organisers said, “We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”

Deaths by drowning in Spain have been rising for the last five consecutive years, reaching 472 in 2025, and if the trend continues, that figure could be surpassed this year. In total, 211 people have already drowned in Spain so far in 2026.
