Flu cases and stomach bugs on the rise in Murcia
Low flu vaccination rates have been said to accompany the surge in respiratory and stomach viruses
The Region of Murcia is experiencing a significant surge in influenza cases, with a 122% increase in incidence over just the past week, according to the Regional Ministry of Health’s epidemiological surveillance system. The infection rate now stands at 165 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Other respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which can lead to bronchitis and bronchiolitis, are also on the rise, contributing to a 33% increase in acute respiratory infections overall.
Additionally, cases of norovirus, known as the stomach flu for its symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain, are being detected in greater numbers, though this infection is not officially monitored.
To combat the spread of norovirus, health officials emphasise the importance of regular handwashing as a simple yet effective preventive measure.
Despite the escalating numbers, hospitals in the Region are reported to be operating “normally”, according to Health Minister Juan José Pedreño.
All the same, measures are being taken to manage increased patient loads. The Arrixaca hospital has opened two pre-admission units and is referring some cases to a clinic in Alcantarilla.
Reina Sofía hospital continues to utilise its pre-admission unit, while Santa Lucía hospital has had to place patients in corridors, prompting calls to reopen closed wards at Rosell hospital.
Primary care is also under pressure, with appointment slots filling quickly, forcing delays. Many health centres are fully booked until next week, and additional patients are being accommodated by overloading schedules.
These challenges have been compounded by recurring failures in the electronic prescription system, which disrupted services again this Monday.
The Minister of Health has urged residents to follow preventive measures, including vaccination and the use of masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms.
However, vaccination uptake remains low, with fewer than half of those over 60 vaccinated against influenza and only 26% receiving COVID-19 boosters this winter.
