Home delivery costs rise: Which Spanish supermarkets offer the best deals
One of the most popular supermarkets in Spain will soon hike up delivery charges by a euro
Each year, Spain’s consumer watchdog conducts a survey to find out shoppers’ favourite supermarket, and time after time, Mercadona comes out on top for its value for money and wide range of own-brand products. But that only looks at shopping in-store. What about those of us who choose home delivery?
Grocery shopping can be a bit of a pain for people who don’t own a car, especially during the summer months, so taking advantage of the supermarket home delivery service can make life a lot easier.
Like it or not, all supermarkets and hypermarkets in Spain have raised their prices to combat inflation and the increase in production costs, but you might be surprised to know that this extends beyond groceries and actually impacts delivery charges too.
Here, we’ll take a look at the cheapest and most expensive supermarkets in Spain for home delivery. It’s worth noting that Aldi is the only major chain that doesn’t currently offer home delivery.
Mercadona
Spain’s favourite grocery chain has caused a bit of an uproar this week with news that, from February 11, it will hike up its delivery charge to 8.20 euros, which is 99 cents more than the current 7.21 euros.
Mercadona has explained its decision by arguing that it is making this increase "after 25 years without doing so, despite the increase in the cost of living and inflation."
What has not changed in the Valencian chain is that in order to make an online purchase and have it delivered to your home, you must make a minimum order of 50 euros.
On the other hand, if you buy your groceries in store and then have Mercadona staff deliver them for you, this will continue to cost just 6.50 euros.
Carrefour
The French chain charges its customers 7.99 euros for sending their purchases directly to their homes. Unlike Mercadona, Carrefour does not require a minimum order to enjoy this service.
Lidl
The German giant does provide an online shopping service and delivery, but not for food and drinks. However, customers can choose from a wide array of clothes, kitchen utensils and small appliances, among others.
The cost of delivery is 3.99 euros but if the purchase is over 79 euros it is free. There is no minimum order required for delivery to your home.
Dia
This company does not require a minimum amount to be spent and charges 4.99 euros for the service unless the order is more than 100 euros.
Eroski
The cost of online delivery for the Basque supermarket chain is 3.95 euros in its standard form. The service is free for orders over 140 euros provided payment is made with the establishment's credit card. There is no minimum order requirement.
Consum
Consum does not require a minimum order but does not offer the service free of charge either. The cost for grocery orders up to 60 euros is 7 euros. For orders over 60 euros, Consum charges 4 euros.
Alcampo
The French chain does not offer free shipping either. It charges a fee of 7 euros for standard delivery but it does not require a minimum amount to be spent per order.
El Corte Ingles
The Spanish company charges up to 8 euros for delivering purchases to the customer's home. This service is free for deliveries of 130 euros or more. It also does not require a minimum order.
