ARCHIVED - Javea recycles 50 tonnes of used clothing in six months

Around 228,000 items collected in the Marina Alta municipality, Alicante province, will be reused or recycled.

Residents in Javea have contributed towards the recycling of more than 50 tonnes of clothes and other textiles - equating to around 228,000 items placed in containers across the town.

The items, deposited between January and June this year, will now have a second life and through reuse and recycling, handled by Humana, People for People Foundation.

"Thanks to the commitment of residents who have deposited clothes, footwear, accessories and household textiles they no longer use in the Foundation's containers, a double benefit will be achieved, firstly the reduction in the generation of waste that ends up in landfills, and secondly, the recovery of textiles will avoid the emission of 161 tonnes of CO2" said the Foundation.

Humana generates one permanent job for every 30,000 kg of textile collected and allocates a percentage of the resources obtained to social projects.

"We are extremely grateful for the involvement of our citizens in recycling, but there is still a long way to go", added the local council, pointing out that it is estimated each person discards between 20 and 30 kilos of textiles annually, but only a tenth is currently recycled or reused.

Elsewhere in the province, Alicante city council has begun installing 100 plastic and packaging recycling bins adapted for use by the elderly, people with reduced mobility and the visually impaired.
