November 24 Solidarity march in Águilas against domestic violence
This year’s awareness raising campaign from the Department of Equality focuses on the misuse of new technologies
This Sunday, November 24, you are invited to come along and join in with the third annual solidarity March Against Gender Violence in Águilas town centre, oragnised by the group Juventudes Socialistas to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which falls on Monday November 25 (25N as the Spanish would call it).
The study ‘Statistics on Domestic Violence and Gender Violence for the Year 2023’ by Spain’s National Institute for Statistics (INE), compiled in May 2024, states that the number of female victims of gender violence in Spain increased by 12.1% in the year 2023, up to 36,582.
The rate of female victims of gender-based violence was 1.7 per 1,000 women aged 14 and over, underscoring the need for greater visibility for this social problem.
As well as Sunday’s march in Águilas, on the Monday at 12 noon there will be a reading of the institutional manifesto in front of the Town Hall and of the three prize-winning stories in the 25N Short Story Competition.
In addition, throughout the month there are theatrical performances of the show ‘Pepín’ by the company Imagine Teatro in primary schools around the municipality, along with sessions for the promotion of positive treatment of women in the workshops at the Women’s Centre.
Águilas’s Councillor for Equality, Elena Casado, explained that this year the Town Hall is putting its focus for 25N on the misuse of emerging technologies when it comes to violence against women.
“Incorrect behaviour has been detected which is becoming normalised,” she said, “such as demanding the location of partners, asking for passwords… in short, control over the partner.”
