A £1.4 million superyacht has been reduced to a charred wreck and sunk off Formentera after a ferocious blaze tore through it in broad daylight, forcing seven crew members to leap into a dramatic sea rescue.

 

The 91 foot Da Vinci caught fire in the engine room on Monday August 11 around 11.30am, with smoke and flames quickly engulfing the vessel. The crew spotted smoke and flames and tried to tackle the fire themselves, activating the onboard fire suppression system, but it quickly spread beyond their control.

 

A distress call was picked up by Maritime Rescue, which deployed the Guardamar Concepción Arenal from Ibiza along with the Salvamar Naos, carrying a team of firefighters. A Baleària ferry, Ramón Llull, en route from La Savina in Formentera to Denia, diverted towards the scene near Es Vedrà to offer assistance but later resumed its journey once it was confirmed that help was on the way.

 

Marine fire crews arrived and evacuated all seven people to safety, transporting them to the port of Ibiza. “The seven crew members have been evacuated by the Naos to land in good condition,” Maritime Rescue confirmed in a statement.

 

Despite their efforts to douse the flames, the fire could not be brought under control. The yacht eventually sank about 7.3 miles south-west of Formentera early in the afternoon. The Guardamar remained in the area afterwards to clear debris from the water.

 

The Da Vinci was manufactured by Astondoa as part of its 95 GLX series, produced between 1997 and 2004, and could accommodate up to ten guests plus an owner’s suite.

 

Investigators are now working to determine the exact cause of the blaze, although the engine compartment is considered one of the most common sources of fires at sea.

 

Maritime Rescue has praised the speed and coordination of the emergency response, which ensured that everyone on board escaped without injury.
