A devastating explosion and fire at a fireworks factory in Alicante has left one person missing and several others injured, with the nearby AVE train line between Murcia and Madrid suspended due to the emergency.
The blast, which occurred at the Hermanos Sirvent fireworks factory in the Fontcalent area, prompted a massive response from emergency services.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion happened at around 11.25am, with flames and smoke billowing out of the factory as firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene. The fire is believed to have started in a warehouse and the cause is currently under investigation.
One person suffered third degree burns and three others were slightly injured. Still unaccounted for is Pedro Luis Sirvent, one of the founders of the fireworks factory and father of the current managers, according to family sources.
The accident, according to Adif, caused the suspension of the high-speed line Alicante Terminal, Monforte del Cid and Madrid from 12.30pm, at the request of the Alicante Provincial Council firefighters. Trips leaving from Murcia to Alicante, bound for the Spanish capital, were also put on hold.
Firefighters and drones are still working to quench the fire and prevent any further flare-ups but the authorities have widened the exclusion zone due to the huge amount of flammable material inside the factory.
The mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, confirmed that one seriously injured victim was transferred by helicopter to the La Fe Hospital in Valencia.
Barcala said that the Alicante Local Police arrived at the scene first and that “they performed an absolutely heroic action” by entering the burning building to rescue those trapped inside.
