Why emerging technology could mean 2025 is that year that puts Murcia on the tourism map
The Council is to receive 5 million euros to improve technological features for tourism in Murcia
The Muria City Council will receive aid of 5.14 million euros from the European Next Generation fund for the technological transformation of the city and its tourist infrastructure. The project will allow for the creation of virtual assistants with holograms, develop shows in fountains and install interactive information screens.
The Ministry of Industry and Tourism confirmed that they are to receive the fund in order to
"promote more digital and intelligent relationships between tourists, companies and residents and generate data that allow better decision-making on more efficient and sustainable management challenges."
Furthermore, these funds for the technological improvements are not the only ones to be collected by the Region of Murcia. The Councillor for Urban Development and Smart City, José Guillén, emphasised that the work to be done in Murcia is "the best valued", and has therefore made it "worthy of the highest allocation" within a total budget of nearly 95 million euros for the whole of Spain. The Murcia proposal is to receive the most funds out of 46 tourist destinations that put their names forward for funding.
The subsidies which will be collected from the European Union will address various aspects that aim, from a technological approach, to "prioritise the improvement of citizen well-being and social inclusion, as well as sustainability". The local council believes that this investment will position Murica as a benchmark for smart tourism and sustainable urban management.
4.7 million euros will be invested in the implementation of technology, such as the creation of an artificial intelligence assistant for tourist data and cameras that measure visitor flows in popular areas. Moreover, interpretation centres such as Monteagudo or San Antonio el Pobre will be digitalised, while generating holograms as virtual assistants and creating immersive 3D experiences will be developed in the Gastronomy Interpretation Centre.
Furthermore, 148,000 euros will be allocated to technical and administrative support in the management and execution of the project and to the training of technical staff in the use of the implemented technologies. Moreover, communication and dissemination expenses for the different actions of the project will also be financed, as well as the training of technical staff in the use of the implemented technologies.
The subsidised project has a maximum execution period of June 30, 2026. This leaves around a year and a half for all the work to be done. However, The councillor emphasised that in many cases these are not proposals that are starting now, but instead many have already been working for some time and that these funds will facilitate their expansion and improvement.
