Alicante TRAM strikes extended to the afternoons

Public transport in Alicante city will cancel a quarter of its services from this week

Alicante TRAM workers are upping the ante from Monday February 3, extending the morning-only strike action which started last week to include the afternoons as well. This means that lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will only operate at 75% capacity between the hours of 7am and 10am and again from 6pm to 9pm.

In total, around 40 trams will remain off the tracks each day at peak times designed to hit commuters the hardest.

The protest, called by the unions of the Alicante TRAM, will continue throughout the month of February and will cause a drastic reduction in frequencies during the next five weeks, from Monday to Friday.

The industrial action has been initiated because the authorities have failed to hire the nine new drivers needed handle the increased traffic expected in 2025.

After the first week of protests, the workers' representatives say they have not reached a solution with the transport authorities, so the strike will continue, as planned, for the entire month of February.

Throughout the month, the tram will reduce its frequency by 25% in two three-hour bands in the morning and afternoon, from Monday to Friday. This means that, if on L2, from Luceros to San Vicente del Raspeig, there are usually 12 trams in those three hours, from this Monday only 9 will be in operation, creating waiting times of half an hour at certain times in the morning. On L3, for example, passengers can expect a one-hour interval between trams.

Although minimum services of 75% have been established, waiting times will still increase during peak transport hours. For this reason, it is advisable to check the timetables on the official TRAM website to avoid any inconvenience when travelling.
