Los Nietos residents plan protest march in Cartagena to call for fairer treatment
Residents are demanding long-promised and much-needed improvements from Cartagena City Council, which they accuse of ignoring and forgetting them

The residents of Los Nietos are preparing to march through Cartagena on Thursday July 31 in protest at what they describe as years of neglect by local authorities.
The demonstration, organised by the Neighbourhood Association, will begin in Plaza de España and end in Calle Alfonso XIII, under the rallying, plaintive cry “Los Nietos exists too”.
Tim Bromage, Vice President of the Neighbourhood Association, called Los Nietos ‘the forgotten village’, and highlighted the sense of injustice felt in the town, which belongs to the municipality of Cartagena and thus falls under their jurisdiction.
“The lack of investment in Los Nietos is evident in comparison with, for example, Islas Menores, where the council have recently installed brightly coloured benches, large red hearts for recycling plastic bottles and new bins,” he said. “We have none of this, despite the fact that Los Nietos has more residents than Islas Menores – 1,443 compared to just 260 in the last census.”
Back in February 2022, Cartagena’s mayor, Noelia Arroyo, visited the town and promised to push forward with repairs to the promenade and other maintenance works. She also committed to requesting the removal of breakwaters, a pledge that has since been fulfilled. However, the promenade itself remains untouched.
“It’s still without electricity, with broken paving,” said Nani Vergara, President of the Neighbourhood Association.
Other grievances include the poor state of beach access points and the lack of clearly named streets in the area known as Los Nietos Viejos, where around 260 residents live.
“We all pay our taxes, and more than in Cartagena. I pay three times more IBI here in Los Nietos than in the city,” said Vergara.
Residents also criticise the condition of the village’s public infrastructure. There are few functional litter bins, and the sports courts have seen no significant repairs in years.
For all these reasons and their long-standing grievances, residents are hoping their message will be heard loud and clear at the protest at the end of July.
Bromage concluded, “If you are not bothered by the lack of investment in your village then you don’t need to support this demonstration, but if you are physically able and, like me, want changes made so we can all live in a better environment, we need to make our voices heard.”
